Author Larry Tye Speaks at Isaiah Breakfast Program

Sunday, September 18, 2016 9:15 AM   -   10:45 AM
Location: Social Hall, Meeting Room

Topic: Bobby Kennedy’s Bridge-Building Campaign of 1968:
Are you listening, Hillary and Donald?

Listen to author Larry Tye’s stories from his new bestselling book, Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon. David Nasay wrote in the The New York Times Book Review: “We are in Larry Tye’s debt for bringing back to life the young presidential candidate who ... for a brief moment, almost half a century ago, instilled hope for the future in angry, fearful Americans.” History remembers Robert F. Kennedy as a racial healer, a tribune for the poor, and the last progressive knight of a bygone era of American politics. But Kennedy’s enshrinement in the liberal pantheon was actually the final stage of a journey that had its beginnings in the conservative 1950s. In Bobby Kennedy, Larry Tye peels away layers of myth and misconception to paint a complete portrait of this singularly fascinating figure.

Larry has entertained and enlightened Temple Isaiah audiences with talks on several of his previous books, from bios of Satchel Paige and Superman to a book on the thriving Jewish diaspora. Tye runs the Boston-based Health Coverage Fellowship, which helps the media do a better job reporting on critical issues like public health, mental health, and high-tech medicine. From 1986 to 2001, Tye was an award-winning reporter at The Boston Globe, where his primary beat was medicine. He also served as The Globe’s environmental reporter, roving national writer, investigative reporter, and sports writer. A graduate of Brown University, Tye was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1993-94. He taught journalism at Boston University, Northeastern, and Tufts. He was also a Temple Isaiah member for many years.

This talk is sponsored by Brotherhood. General admission includes a bagel and lox breakfast for $10, or free with Brotherhood membership. (Annual Brotherhood dues cost $60; partners can join for $50; dues are free for new Temple Isaiah members.) For further information, please email brotherhood@templeisaiah.net.
